NBA – Bulls coach Billy Donovan isn’t concerned about the team’s first-round draft pick
Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan says the team’s first-round draft pick hasn’t been a part of his conversations with the front office and ownership ahead of next month’s NBA trade deadline. Chicago has won four of five after its 114-110 victory over San Antonio, leaving the Bulls with a 17-19 record. Chicago owes its first-round selection in the 2025 draft to San Antonio as part of the 2021 DeMar DeRozan trade, but the pick is top-10 protected.

NFL – Lions celebrate regular-season milestones, rest up for the NFC playoffs
The Detroit Lions and their ear-ringing fans celebrated a feat that the franchise pulled off for the first time. The Lions’ 31-9 win over Minnesota on Sunday night gave them a No. 1 seed in the NFL playoffs and home-field advantage through the NFC for the first time, increasing their chances of finally making it to a Super Bowl. The Lions will host the lowest-seed still standing in the NFC playoffs in the divisional round Jan. 18 or 19. If they avoid getting upset in that game, they will be a win away from the ultimate destination.

NFL – The Bears turn attention to their coaching search after finishing 5-12
The Chicago Bears ended a 10-game losing streak with a rare win at Green Bay. Now, after finishing last in the NFC North at 5-12, their coaching search kicks into gear. Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson figures to be at the top of the Bears’ wish list. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel and Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy also could get looks. Interim coach Thomas Brown, who took over after Matt Eberflus was fired on Nov. 29, will also interview for the job.

NFL – Shane Steichen eager to move forward with Colts
Shane Steichen is ready to start his third season as coach of the Indianapolis Colts and he’s already making changes. Owner Jim Irsay announced Sunday night that Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard will return after Indy went 8-9 and missed the playoffs. The same can’t be said for defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who won’t be retained. Steichen said in a statement Monday night that he thought it was time for a change. Steichen will need to continue developing quarterback Anthony Richardson, who showed he can lead a dynamic running game but struggled with accuracy on his passes.

The Big Ten and Southeastern Conference each has seven teams ranked in the AP top 25 women’s basketball poll, including four apiece in the first 10. Both have been bolstered this season by conference realignment, with No. 1 UCLA and No. 4 USC joining the Big Ten while No. 5 Texas and No. 10 Oklahoma joined the SEC. UCLA, South Carolina and Notre Dame remain the top three teams this week.

NCAAWBB – Maddy Westbeld makes return to Notre Dame after foot surgery
Maddy Westbeld returned to No. 3 Notre Dame’s lineup after missing first part of the season with a foot injury. She sat out the Irish’s first 13 games recovering from a left foot injury. She had surgery in the end of August when she got back to school. Her return makes Notre Dame deeper. Westbeld is in her fifth year at the school after taking advantage of the COVID year that her class was offered when she was a freshman.

NCAAFB – North Dakota State wins 10th FCS title
Cam Miller ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more to lead North Dakota State to its record 10th Football Championship Subdivision title. The Bison beat top-seeded and previously undefeated Montana State 35-32 on Monday night. Miller was making his 54th consecutive start for North Dakota State. The Bison played in the title game for the 11th time in 14 seasons, and have lost only one in Frisco, Texas. They last won the championship three years ago, in a game that also had Miller and Montana State’s Tommy Mellott as the starting quarterbacks. Montana State’s last title came 40 years ago.

NCAAFB – Tough, old school defense a calling card for four teams left in CFP
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Smothering defenses have carried the last four teams still in the hunt for the national championship. If you want offense, look elsewhere this weekend. The defenses, with All-Americans spread throughout the lineups, are the story of the semifinals. Ohio State, Texas Penn State and Notre Dame all rank in top eight nationally in total defense. The Buckeyes and Longhorns meet in the Cotton Bowl on Friday. The Nittany Lions and Fighting Irish play in the Orange Bowl on Saturday.

NASCAR – Castroneves to attempt to qualify for Daytona 500
Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will attempt to make his NASCAR debut in next month’s Daytona 500 with Trackhouse Racing. Castroneves is one of the most popular drivers in IndyCar history. He has been trying for two years to get a Daytona 500 seat and finally landed one Monday as part of Trackhouse’s “Project 91” designed to give renowned racers from outside of NASCAR a shot in a stock car. Castroneves will need to qualify for the Feb. 16 race with either a fast time in time trials, or, race his way in via a qualifying race. If Castroneves won the Daytona 500, he would join Foyt and Mario Andretti as the only drivers to win both the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500.
