Eaton Park in St. Joseph Township is set to receive some enhancements this spring.
During January’s board meeting, the St. Joseph Township board approved a contract worth $79,406 with McGuire Construction to upgrade the press box towers in preparation for the upcoming spring sports season.
Public works supervisor Dave Rindfield tells us that this project marks the second phase, following the initial work completed last year.
“We wanted to make the park look a little nicer and rather than just having a block building,” Rindfield says. “We worked with McGuires here a year ago and we really liked how they looked, so we decided to finish it off this year and get the remaining three done.”
Rindfield explained that these improvements will help extend the longevity of the press boxes, which had not been updated since their original construction many years ago. So, what can we expect from this project?
“They put furring strips on there and then we sited them all and then wrapped the windows that are upstairs where they open them up for announcing,” Rindfield says. “Then we put roll-up doors there instead of having the old wooden hinge doors up there on the top.”
Weather permitting, the work could begin this winter, aiming to have the press boxes ready ahead of the softball and baseball seasons.
