Research by IBM has found a majority of new cars will have an electrified powertrain in the next decade.

The company’s “Automotive 2035” study found 74% of executives surveyed believe by 2035 vehicles will be software defined and AI powered.

Professional Engineering with Detroit Mercy Director Paul Spadafora says the future is thrilling, but it should also demand our caution.

Additionally, as our vehicles become smarter and more connected, risk of cyber threats increases,” Spadafora said. “In the United States, where a vast amount of data is collected, organizations wrestle with complex cyber security challenges that could compromise your safety and privacy.”

Spadafora says this could usher in more data breaches, ransomware attacks, and other malicious activities. He says that should be addressed now while they’re planning for the future.
