With the death of former President Jimmy Carter, the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids has a new display on Carter.

It may seem a little odd that the Ford Museum would commemorate the life of Carter, but President Carter and Ford became very good friends after they were both out of office, even though Carter beat Ford for the presidency in 1976. Gerald R. Ford Foundation President Gleaves Whitney says they bonded on a flight to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s funeral.

Both were committed to eradicating disease,” Whitney said. “They both were committed to the voting integrity in countries around the world, supporting democracy. They both supported the Boy Scouts. They had joint appearances in more than 25 different causes.”

Whitney says Carter will stand tall with time because post-presidency, no one did more to make the world a better place than Jimmy Carter.
