All lanes of I-94 in Stevensville are now open following the completion of the first year of the I-94 rebuilding project in Berrien County.

MDOT spokesman Nick Schirripa the first phase of work went smoothly overall.

“Obviously, we went a little bit deeper into the year than we planned, but we had some issues with that bridge completion, the beam fabrication, which put us behind a couple weeks, but not unusual,” Schirripa says. “We’re talking about a three-year project. To lose a week or two is still well within the margin of error from our perspective.”

The first year’s efforts involved the reconstruction of both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94, stretching from Puertz Road, just west of the Red Arrow Highway exit 23, to Washington Avenue. This phase took approximately nine months to complete.

Schirripa tells us the next stage in 2025 will cover the area from Washington Avenue to Britain Avenue.

“We’re kind of in shutdown mode here for the winter, about three months,”Schirripa says. “Coming back in March, we’ll start working on the westbound ramps at exit 23. That will require those, the exit to be closed on the westbound side while we’re doing that bridge work.

This three-year project, estimated at $204 million, is funded by Governor Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program.
