The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has awarded $50 million in grant funding to schools across the state for the installation of bottle-filling stations, faucet-mount filters, filtered water pitchers, and replacement cartridges to protect students from lead under the Michigan Filter First program.

In all, the $50 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding will go to 612 public school districts, public school academies, and nonpublic schools. Grant funding will also benefit 122 childcare centers.

Here in Southwest Michigan, Benton Harbor Charter School Academy is receiving more than $17,000 for bottle-filling stations and cartridges.

Berrien Springs Public Schools is receiving $58,000 for the same reason.

Berrien RESA is getting $12,000.

Bridgman Public Schools is receiving $22,000.

Buchanan Community Schools is getting $82,000.

Dowagiac Union Schools is getting $204,000.

Eau Claire Public Schools is receiving $7,500.

Paw Paw Public Schools is getting $111,000.

South Haven Public Schools is receiving $37,000.

Watervliet is getting $42,000.
