Michigan State Police wants to remind drivers to slow down and be mindful of their winter driving behavior.
MSP Fifth district Lt. Duwayne Robinson tells us drivers need to be aware of the road conditions before you get behind the wheel to minimize the chances of an accident.
“Just because the speed limit says 70 out on I-94 or 55 on M-140, when the road conditions are impacted by snow and ice, you have to then adjust your speed and your driving to a level where you are already maintaining control of your vehicle,” Robinson says.
Robinson also highlighted that drivers need to be courteous of snow plows and salt trucks. Drivers are supposed to allow for 6 to 10 car lengths between your vehicle and the plow. You’re also expected to move over, if and when necessary.
“You are also are not allowed to pass them. If you find yourself stuck behind them, the safest thing to do is to stay behind and not attempt to pass because that’s dangerous.”
MSP encourages drivers to winterize their vehicles and ensure everything is working before getting on the road.
