Interim Benton Harbor City Manager Alex Little is likely to have the “interim” dropped from his title soon.

Benton Harbor City Commissioners this week interviewed two candidates for the position of city manager. Little was one candidate, while the other was Wilmern Griffin, an underwriter for the city of Detroit. During the interviews, Little told commissioners he’s enjoyed serving the city and is glad to have made Benton Harbor his permanent home after moving around the country.

In the commission’s scoring of the candidate interviews, Little came out on top with a 71%, compared to Griffin’s 64%.

At this week’s meeting of the city Personnel and Finance Committee, Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the numbers don’t lie.

As far as the scoring process, it was done publicly and each individual commissioner filled out the score sheet,” Muhammad said. “The scores have been given, so that’s the democratic process. Each commissioner, as well as the mayor, is elected by the people. Each one of us are elected by the people. So, we have a voice and we have a vote, and it was exercised.”

Committee Chair Edward Isom said this means Little will be offered the job of city manager. That’s likely to happen in December.

Little has been serving as interim city manager since the city parted ways with former manager Ellis Mitchell in April. Little is also the city’s community and economic development director and was assistant city manager under Ellis.
