Some utility customers in Michigan are nervous about utility workers going to their homes after two men posing as DTE workers killed a Rochester Hills man last month.

Wednesday was Utility Scams Awareness Day and Chris Fultz of Consumer’s Energy says the company takes precautions when it visits the homes of customers.

“Much of the time when we have planned work, we’ll make every attempt certainly to coordinate with our customers so they know what to expect and when we’ll be there and so they know we’re coming,” Fultz said. “There are times — and this can happen any time of the day — for example, if somebody calls and says, ‘Hey, I smell gas, we go and investigate. And in that case, you might not know that we’re coming.”

Fultz says if you get a visit from utility workers and you’re uncomfortable, call the utility to make sure workers are supposed to be there. He notes all Consumers Energy employees carry a badge.
