It’s quiet on Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau Director Tim High says on the island, many businesses close between November and April.

“The higher end hotels on the island don’t open up in the winter, but we do have some of the other bed and breakfast and hotels that open,” High said. “The pricing is more affordable than in the summertime. Again, it’s incumbent to check on MackinacIsland.org and look to see what’s available.”

That’s because nothing is consistent in the winter, so you want to plan ahead.

High says some look for that slower pace and it’s usually not as cold as you would find in the U.P. because the water insulates the island. Still, there are a few other events coming up, like the annual Christmas tree lighting and, of course, the New Year’s Eve Great Turtle Drop.
