Brandywine Community Schools is celebrating and honoring veterans this year from the Lest We Forget organization. This past Monday, students presented Lest We Forget’s seventh book, “Book of Heroes”, to veterans they interviewed for the book itself.
Brandywine high school history teacher Abilyn Janke tells us during the school year last year, her ninth graders were tasked with talking with a veteran and writing down their stories that will be shared in this new upcoming book.
“It’s a very proud teacher moment,” Janke says. “I have a lot of pride in their hard work and their dedication and their vision for this whole process. We worked on this for a month last year and they were really invested.”
The new book contains 72 local veteran stories, with 21 of them written by Brandywine High School students. Lest We Forget President Larry Wozniak says he’s happy to see young people still want to learn about U.S. history and the military.
“The whole reason for Lest We Forget is to educate and we know that schools don’t talk a lot about the military history anymore,” Wozniak says. “Getting the kids involved and having them actually talk to veterans, learn their stories, and come up with a story for the book it’s just a fantastic thing.”
The book will be available for purchase at the Lest We Forget Veterans Day Patriotic Music Concert at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College on Nov. 10. Copies of the book will be on sale for $20 each.
