The Neighbors Organizing Against Racism organization is launching a new award recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to social justice, equality, and community service.
The John Lewis Hometown Hero Award is a way to not only celebrate community heroes but help raise funds to continue NOAR’s work in fighting racism building a strong community.
NOAR director Trenton Bowens tells us community members can now nominate and participate in the voting process.
“Hometown Hero Award is an individual who has showcased activism and community involvement in just being a community hero that exemplifies the spirit of good trouble. And this year we’re allowing the community to nominate an individual, but also at the same time the community will get to vote.”
Starting today, the public can start nominating outstanding individuals who embody the spirit of the late civil rights leader, John Lewis.
Nominations are open until November 5th. Voting will begin Nov. 6th and is $4 per vote. You can vote online here.
The winner with the most votes will receive the award at a special ceremony in February 2025.
