Some big work is coming up at the Berrien County Juvenile Center.

Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday, County Administrator Brian Dissette said a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Division of Juvenile Justice grant could help to pay for a large part of the project.

We are working with Wightman and Ignite to design a new drinking water well system, as well as a new septic tank for the juvenile center,” Dissette said. “The additional scope of work includes a variety of electrical upgrades within the building.”

Dissette said the county is applying for a $2 million grant to help pay for the overall $3.5 million project. If the grant is approved, then the county could just use the savings on other projects. If it’s not approved, the funds will all come from the deferred maintenance budget.

Dissette expects to learn if the grant’s been approved early next year. He said the opportunity really aligns with what the county is trying to do.

Commissioners Thursday approved the grant application. Dissette told commissioners to cross their fingers.
