The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has honored retired Building and Grounds Superintendent Robert Ray for his years of service.

At Thursday’s regular meeting, Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough read the resolution saluting Ray for the work he’s done for the county. He started as a building and grounds worker in 2009 and became superintendent in 2015. Yarbrough said he served during some rough times.

Robert’s leadership and direction enabled the building and Brown’s department to endure and overcome two of the most extraordinary events in  Berrien County history in the courthouse shooting of 2016 and the pandemic of 2020, events that weighed heavily on the staff and the work that was required of them,” Yarbrough read.

Yarbrough said Ray’s commitment to the county is on every building and painted surface it owns. The resolution also noted he’d still be with the county if not for a health issue.

Ray thanked the board and said the county has done a lot for him and his family.
