Tigers 4, Rays 3 – Tigers rally late to move closer to playoffs with 4-3 win over Rays
Justyn-Henry Malloy’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly helped the Detroit Tigers rally from a 3-0 deficit to move closer to the postseason with a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Detroit, who have won five straight, entered the game tied with Kansas City for the second and third American League wildcard spots, two games ahead of the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers trailed 3-2 with one out in the eighth, but Riley Greene singled off Garrett Cleavinger (7-5) and Matt Vierling drew a walk. Keith tied the game with an RBI single, bringing up Malloy — the last position player on the Tigers bench — to pinch hit for Kerry Carpenter. He lifted a fly ball to medium center and Vierling easily beat Jose Siri’s throw.  Beau Brieske (4-4) got the win with two innings of relief. Jason Foley pitched the ninth for his 27th save.  With Minnesota’s loss to Miami, the Tigers magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 1.  Meaning 1 win or 1 loss by Minnesota will secure Detroit’s playoff spot.

White Sox 7, Angels 0 – White Sox stay at 120 losses as Flexen shines in 7-0 victory over Angels
The Chicago White Sox averted a record-breaking loss for the third straight day, beating the Los Angeles Angels 7-0 behind Chris Flexen’s sharp pitching performance. Chicago improved to 39-120 with its three-game sweep of Los Angeles. It has been tied with the 1962 New York Mets for the modern major league record for losses since Sunday’s 4-2 setback at San Diego. The White Sox have three games left this weekend at Detroit. They finished their home schedule with a 23-58 record. Flexen struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings in his first win since May 8.

MLB – Athletics bid emotional farewell to Oakland Coliseum, that was home since 1968
Manager and former Oakland outfielder Mark Kotsay fought tears as the Athletics bid an emotional farewell to their beloved Coliseum they’ve called home since 1968, complete with all its quirks like plumbing problems and rally possums. Also those stray cats who helped inspire Hall of Famer Tony La Russa’s former Animal Rescue Foundation. Longtime supporters and kids alike stole away from work or school to be at the park for the matinee finale against the Texas Rangers. Kotsay says he will treasure this for the rest of his life.

NCAAFB – Michigan’s high-powered rushing game poses a challenge for Minnesota
This looks like one of the seasons where No. 12 Michigan goes as far as its running game and defense can take it.That’s not good news for Minnesota. One week after giving up 272 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in a 31-14 home loss to Iowa, the Golden Gophers will be facing a Wolverines offense that is even better on the ground. Last week, Michigan put up 290 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-24 win over USC.

NCAAFB – No. 3 Ohio State opens Big Ten play on the road at Michigan State
No. 3 Ohio State kicks off its Big Ten season Saturday with a prime-time game at Michigan State. The Buckeyes look to keep their momentum going after dominating nonconference foes Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall. Ohio State outscored the three 157-20 and did not allow any points in the second half. The Spartans are 3-1 and coming off a 23-19 loss at Boston College. The Buckeyes have won eight straight games against the Spartans since Michigan State upset No. 2 Ohio State in 2015.

Prescott has won his last 13 starts against the Giants. He found Lamb for a 55-yard catch-and-run touchdown on a play that ended with the receiver being called for taunting. There were some significant injuries in the fourth quarter with Dallas’ Micah Parsons carted off the field with a leg injury and the Giants’ Malik Nabers suffering a concussion.

NFL – Williams, Bears look to stop skid while Rams hope to build on dramatic win
Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears look to get back to winning, while Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams hope to build on a dramatic win. Chicago has dropped two straight since a season-opening win over Tennessee, losing at Houston and Indianapolis. Williams showed some promise against the Colts last week. The No. 1 overall draft pick threw for a Bears rookie record of 363 yards and his first two touchdowns. But he also had two interceptions and got sacked four times behind a shaky line. The Rams are coming off a dramatic win over San Francisco.

NFL –Campbell will aim to improve 0-3 mark against Seattle when Lions host Seahawks
Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell has been humbled by the Seattle Seahawks, losing to them in each of the last three seasons. The NFC West-leading Seahawks have another shot to beat the Campbell-led Lions at Ford Field on Monday night. Seattle is 3-0 under new coach Mike Macdonald. He has the chance to become the second NFL coach younger than 40 to go 4-0 since 1933. A matchup to watch will be the Lions’ Jared Goff going against the NFL’s top-ranked team against the pass. Goff has thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes through three games, and he isn’t throwing many deep passes.

NFL – Colts leaning on improved defense and strong ground game to try to derail Steelers
The Indianapolis Colts have finally found a winning combination with Jonathan Taylor’s strong running and an improved defense. It’s a formula the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers know well. On Sunday, the two old rivals will square off again in Indianapolis. The Steelers also have a familiar look, bringing the league’s stingiest defense to town along with an emerging offense led by Justin Fields. But Indy also understands it faces a big challenge, contending with game-wrecking T.J. Watt. The Steelers have won seven of the last nine in this series.

WNBA – Chicago Sky fire coach Teresa Weatherspoon after 1 season, reports say
The Chicago Sky fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon after one season, reports said Thursday. The Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune cited unidentified sources in reporting that Weatherspoon had been let go. The Sky did not immediately return a message sent by The Associated Press seeking confirmation of the reports. Chicago finished this season 13-27 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018, despite drafting star rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The next coach will be the team’s fourth since the Sky won the WNBA championship in 2021.

NBA – Derrick Rose, No. 1 pick in 2008 and the 2011 NBA MVP, announces retirement
Derrick Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and the league’s MVP in 2011, announced his retirement on Thursday. Rose was the league’s rookie of the year in 2008-09 for the Bulls, was the league’s MVP two seasons later and was an All-Star selection in three of his first four seasons. A major knee injury during the 2012 playoffs forced him to miss almost two full seasons and he contemplated stepping away from the game several times, but always returning. He would go on to play for five other franchises other than the Bulls — at New York, Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland and Memphis.
