Tigers 2, Rays 1 – Skubal allows two hits in seven scoreless as Tigers continue postseason push by beating Rays
Tarik Skubal allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers took another step toward an improbable postseason appearance with a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. A leading candidate to win the AL Cy Young award, Skubal struck out seven batters while walking only one. He will get a chance for a 19th win on Sunday if the Tigers need him to beat the Chicago White Sox on the final day of the regular season to make the postseason. The Tigers (83-74) ended the day tied with Kansas City for the second and third wild-card spots — the Royals hold the tiebreaker — and two games ahead of the Minnesota Twins.
Cubs 10, Phillies 4 – Cody Bellinger drives in 4 runs in the Cubs’ 10-4 win over the Phillies
Cody Bellinger tripled, singled twice and drove in four runs, and the Chicago Cubs routed the Philadelphia Phillies 10-4. Kyle Schwarber hit his 38th homer of the season and Bryce Harper hit his 30th for the Phillies, who clinched their first NL East title in 13 years on Monday night. Manager Rob Thomson played his regular lineup, minus catcher J.T. Realmuto, as Philadelphia seeks to secure home-field advantage in the NL playoffs. The Cubs took control with a six-run second inning against Tanner Banks and Taijuan Walker.
White Sox 3, Angels 2 – White Sox remain at 120 losses and tied with ’62 Mets, rallying past Angels 3-2
The Chicago White Sox remained tied with the 1962 New York Mets for the modern major league record of 120 losses in a season, rallying to score three runs in the eighth inning and beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2. Andrew Benintendi hit a tiebreaking, two-out single to help the White Sox stave off infamy for at least one more night. Jonathan Cannon pitched three-hit ball over six scoreless innings for Chicago. The White Sox have five games left to set a record no team wants: two more against the Angels and three at Detroit.

MLB – GM Chris Getz says he understands frustration as White Sox wrap up bad season
General manager Chris Getz insists he understands the frustration in Chicago. The White Sox came into Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels tied with the expansion 1962 New York Mets for the post-1900 MLB record of 120 losses in a season. Getz says it’s “not something we’re proud of” and there are “a myriad of reasons why we stand here.” The White Sox had never lost more than 106 games in a season before. They surpassed the mark set by the 1970 team with plenty of time to spare when the New York Mets beat them on Sept. 1. On Saturday, Chicago tied the American League record of 119 losses set by the 2003 Detroit Tigers. A day later, the White Sox matched those ’62 Mets.

NFL – Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre says he has Parkinson’s disease
Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre told a congressional committee Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Favre made the announcement as part of his testimony about a welfare misspending scandal in Mississippi. Favre does not face criminal charges, but he has repaid just over $1 million in speaking fees funded by a welfare program in the state. He was also an investor a biotech company with ties to the case that said it was developing concussion drugs. It is unclear if Favre’s disease is connected to his football career or head injuries.
NFL – Home address of Lions head coach posted online following team’s playoff loss
A classmate of Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell’s daughter reposted the family’s home address on social media following the team’s January playoff loss. The Detroit News reports that the incident was among others that included people stopping by the Bloomfield Township home uninvited and preceded the family’s move earlier this year to another home purchased by a limited liability company. Campbell and wife, Holly, listed the 7,800-square-foot Bloomfield Township house for sale this month at $4.5 million. The team finished the 2023 regular season with a 12-5 record. Detroit defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the wild card game and got past Tampa Bay before losing the conference championship 34-31 to the San Francisco 49ers.
NFL – Status quo in Pittsburgh, where Justin Fields will remain at QB
Mike Tomlin is in no hurry to announce Justin Fields as the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh. While Fields will again get the nod in place of the injured Russell Wilson when the unbeaten Steelers visit Indianapolis, Tomlin stopped short of giving the job to Fields on a full-time basis. Tomlin said there’s no need to make that kind of decision because Wilson still has not been cleared to play. The 35-year-old nine-time Pro Bowler has been limited in recent weeks after aggravating a calf injury days before the opener against Atlanta.
NFL – Five backup QBs have already been pressed into starting duty
Sixty-six quarterbacks started an NFL game last season and already five teams have had to turn to their backup QB through Week 3 this season. Most were pressed into duty because of injuries to the starter although the Carolina Panthers benched Bryce Young for veteran Andy Dalton after the first overall draft pick in 2023 fell to 2-16 with two bad games. Dalton promptly led the Panthers to their first victory. Justin Fields has played so well in Russell Wilson’s absence that he may keep the job. Both Fields and Minnesota’s Sam Darnold have their teams off to 3-0 starts.
NFL – Plenty of parity in the NFL through 3 weeks
Six winless teams earned their first wins of the season. Nine road teams and eight underdogs were winners. It’s only September but the season has been unpredictable, just the way the NFL likes it. A league built on parity has seen plenty of competitive balance in the first three weeks. Five teams remain undefeated: Chiefs, Bills, Steelers, Vikings and Seahawks. The Bengals, Jaguars and Titans are winless. There’s plenty of surprises in that group of eight teams. But there are no guarantees in the NFL and that’s been quite evident over the first three weeks.
NCAAFB – Illinois and Indiana are both 4-0 and sitting atop the Big Ten standings
Don’t look now but Illinois and Indiana, two perennial also-rans in the mighty Big Ten, are both 4-0 and are sitting at the top of the conference table. Consider that the last time both of those schools were unbeaten after the first four games was in 1910. Alot of bad football has been played since. The last time Indiana and Illinois finished the same season with winning records was in 2007 — Indiana was 7-6, Illinois was 9-4. Illinois has big wins over Kansas and Nebraska.
NCAA – Pac-12 files a federal lawsuit against Mountain West
The Pac-12 is suing the Mountain West over what it calls unlawful and unenforceable fees that could cost the rebuilding conference more than $40 million for adding Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State. The antitrust lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in California and is seeking a declaratory judgment by a judge. The Mountain West has exit fees of upward of $17 million for departing schools. There are also poaching fees that were put in place in the Mountain West’s scheduling agreement with Oregon State and Washington State, the only current Pac-12 members this season.
