A popular pizza place in Niles had an unexpected delivery this morning after a car crashed into their storefront and caught the building on fire.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s office reports a deputy in Bertrand Township witnessed a vehicle traveling at an excessive speed just before 5 am, Tuesday morning. When the deputy attempted to stop on the dark-colored SUV, the suspect vehicle fled.

The sheriff’s office report the deputy gave chase engaging in a brief vehicular pursuit. The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle lost control attempting to negotiate a curve and crashed into a commercial building — the Saylor’s Pizza Port — in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue in the city of Niles.

Deputies say the suspect was the sole occupant of the vehicle and sustained non-life threatening injuries. The driver was taken into custody without incident at the scene of the crash.

The sheriff’s office says the suspect vehicle came to rest inside the building which then ignited a structure fire causing extensive damage to the building and the vehicle.

The driver is currently being held on preliminary charges of fleeing and eluding and possession of a stolen vehicle. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending arraignment.
