This week is a chance for Michiganders to hit both local and far-away hiking, biking, and running trails around the state.

Michigan Trails Week runs through Saturday.

Heather Durocher from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the state’s designation as the Trail State is well earned.

We do have a vast trails network,” Durocher said. “We have more than 13,400 miles of designated state managed trails, and then in addition to that, of course, we have thousands of miles of local county and federally managed trails and pathways. So we’re known as a trail state for very good reason.”

Durocher says the Iron Belle trail, which will run from Detroit to Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula, is currently under construction. It will be the longest in the nation once complete.
