U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has dropped his plan to link a temporary funding plan with a mandate that would compel states to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote. This makes a government shutdown at the end of the month less likely.
Congressman Dan Kildee of Flint says the House should vote on the spending measure by Wednesday. He’s frustrated.
“Why we can’t just focus our energy on getting that done before October 1 instead of kicking the can down the road to December or January? It’s one of the most frustrating aspects of this work. And it really comes down to leadership. I’m encouraging, if for example Democrats take control of a Congress, we’ve got to change. We have to break this cycle,” Kildee said.
Whatever the solution might be, Kildee won’t be there for it. He is retiring at the end of the year.
