The Michigan Senate has unanimously approved legislation doubling survivor benefits for police officers and firefighters who were killed or permanently disabled protecting the state.
Lawmakers are aiming to increase the benefits from $25,000 to $50,000.
Senator Kevin Hertel of St. Clair Shores authored the bill and commented.
“We all realize the impact these tragic events have on the families of a public safety officer, and many of us in our communities have seen the impact of this,” Hertel said.
The legislation now moves to the Michigan House.
