A presentation on the the constitutional rules surrounding presidential succession will headline Lake Michigan College’s annual Constitution Day celebration this month.

LMC is inviting students, faculty, and the community to the event on Tuesday, September 17 at the Benton Harbor campus.

Dr. Chris Paine, a member of the LMC history faculty, will give a lecture on the legal framework surrounding the transition of power in the United States. He tells us the 25th Amendment will be among the things he’ll discuss.

Given how president Biden decided not to run for reelection, and also the rumors are he has been threatened with invoking the 25th Amendment as him being incapable of performing his duties, I thought that was a pretty interesting topic to explore,” Paine said.

Paine will also explore the appointment of a vice president, noting there have been a total of 37 years of United States history in which the nation had no vice president. He says Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Following the presentation on the 17th, there will be a Q&A session.

The engagement will be from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in Room L-311 at the Benton Harbor campus, and everyone’s invited.
