How often do you eat together as a family? Probably not that much, according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan health and wellness spokesperson Shanthi Appelo.

Apello says during this Family Meals Month, when families do eat together, they tend to develop better relationships.

According to the Family Dinner Project, only about 30% of families regularly eat together,” Apello said. “It’s Family Meal Mmonth, and it falls at this really important time because we’re about to head back to school, and having this kind of safe space to share about your day as they’re navigating the beginning of the school year, whether that be a new school or new grade, is really important.”

Appelo says try to work in a meal as a family, even if it’s breakfast or lunch. She says studies show it may improve kids’ self esteem and social and emotional development.
