Senator Gary Peters is expecting a bump for Vice President Kalama Harris coming out of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week. Speaking on CNN Monday, Peters said the key to success for Harris is to be herself.

She just has to be who she is,” Peters said. “As you look through that, she’s got to be authentic. Authenticity matters a great deal in an election. People want to know what she cares about, what she’s passionate about, and that’s what we’re going to see at the convention.”

Peters was asked about the chances of Democrats maintaining an edge in the Senate. He said even before President Joe Biden dropped out of the Democratic primary, Democrats in Senate races were faring better than Republicans.

Even if the polling wasn’t that good at the top of the ticket, and it’s because of candidate quality. When folks go in to vote, when it comes to the Senate, they look at each individual, and we have very strong Democratic incumbents and candidates versus flawed Republicans and oftentimes, highly flawed Republican candidates.”

With protesters upset with the war in Gaza on hand for the convention, Peters said Harris needs to make it clear she understands the needs of both Gaza and Israel. He suggested a ceasefire being worked out by President Biden could help.
