Tigers 3, Mariners 2 – F/10 – Baddoo hits game-ending double in 10th as Tigers rally to beat Mariners 3-2
Akil Baddoo’s pinch-hit double in the 10th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Seattle. The teams were playing for the fifth time in eight days. Detroit trailed 2-0 with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but Matt Vierling doubled off Yimi Garcia and Kerry Carpenter hit his third homer in two games to tie the score. Tyler Holton held Seattle scoreless in the top of the 10th and Collin Snider walked Justyn-Henry Malloy to start the bottom of the inning. Baddoo pinch hit a deep fly ball over the head of Victor Robles to win the game.

Yankees 10, White Sox 2 – Judge becomes fastest to reach 300 homers as Yankees beat White Sox 10-2
Aaron Judge reached 300 home runs faster than any other player, going deep in the New York Yankees’ 10-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Judge hit that mark in his 955th game and 3,431st at-bat with a three-run drive in the eighth inning. The six-time All-Star and 2022 AL MVP drove a 3-0 up-and-in sinker Chad Kuhl into the White Sox bullpen in left for his major league-leading 43rd homer. Chicago had intentionally walked Juan Soto to bring up Judge, who had not homered on a 3-0 pitch since 2021.  Soto had homered in the first inning off Davis Martin, his fourth in two games and 34th this season. Austin Wells followed Judge’s drive with one of his own, the eighth time this season New York hit back-to-back homers.

Guardians 6, Cubs 1 – Alex Cobb gets first win in nearly a year and AL-leading Guardians beat Cubs 6-1
Alex Cobb got his first win in nearly a year and Andrés Giménez drove in three runs, sending the American League-leading Cleveland Guardians to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. José Ramírez, Josh Naylor and Will Brennan also had RBIs for Cleveland, which swept the three-game series and extended its winning streak to five. The Guardians are 72-49 and have the best home record in the majors at 38-20. Cobb allowed one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks for his first win since a one-hitter for San Francisco last Aug. 29.

MLB – Amid historic struggles, White Sox will drop season ticket prices for 2025
The Chicago White Sox are lowering season-ticket prices for 2025 by an average of 10% with the team struggling through one of the worst seasons baseball has ever seen. The White Sox were 22-92 entering their Wednesday game against the New York Yankees and are on course for the second-worst winning percentage (.240) of the modern era. Senior vice president Brooks Boyer says the White Sox “thought it was important that it’s something that we do for our season ticketholders who have been very loyal to us.”

WNBA – WNBA stars Clark, Reese make use of Olympic break to reset for sprint to playoffs
Caitlin Clark took full advantage of her snub by the U.S. Olympic team. She visited Mexico, attended a friend’s wedding in Iowa, and even got to see the New York Yankees’ clubhouse. So, when the Indiana Fever star returned to practice Tuesday, she was rested, revived and revved up to restart the WNBA season. Clark, Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and the rest of the WNBA’s remarkable rookies appreciated the Olympic break after playing a grueling college season and then going straight into the professional ranks. The Fever and the Sky currently hold the last two playoff spots.

NFL – Lions coach Dan Campbell says leg injury to Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be ‘fine’
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, dressed in shorts, watched training camp from the sideline on Wednesday after he left practice earlier in the week with a leg injury. As a rookie last season, Gibbs rushed for 945 yards with 10 touchdowns along with 316 receiving yards and a score. After he was sidelined with a soft tissue injury in the spring, he had been healthy during training camp. The team called it a leg injury with ESPN reporting that it’s a hamstring. Coach Dan Campbell does not seem concerned about the injury status of Gibbs or rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (upper body) and Ennis Rakestraw (ankle), who also were injured on Monday.

NFL – Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy to miss season following surgery to repair torn meniscus
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the season after undergoing surgery on his right knee. McCarthy had an operation on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus suffered at some point during his preseason debut last weekend against Las Vegas. The former Michigan standout had a solid training camp and had been expected to back up starter Sam Darnold. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell delivered the news on McCarthy shortly after the team arrived for two days of joint practices with the Browns. McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft after helping the Wolverines to a national title.

NCAAFB – MSU sued by quiz creator over Hitler question streamed on videoboards
Michigan State has been sued over the Adolf Hitler question that appeared on Spartan Stadium screens before a game last season, with the quiz’s creator saying the university didn’t have permission to use its product that “was not created for a mass-market use at an American college football game.” Floris van Pallandt, owner of Carsilius Media, BV, and operator of The Quiz Channel on YouTube, filed a lawsuit against the school’s Board of Regents last week that asks for $150,000 in damages plus fees. Van Pallandt alleges using the quiz was copyright infringement and the company was subject to ridicule for Michigan State’s public showing of the Hitler question.

NCAAFB – MAC – Brett Gabbert’s return from injury makes Miami Ohio MAC favorite
At age 24, Brett Gabbert begins his fourth and — presumably — final college season as a starting quarterback. Gabbert watched his Miami (Ohio) teammates rally to win last year’s Mid-American Conference title after suffering a season-ending right leg injury that kept hi out of the RedHawks final six games. Now that he’s back, healthy, of course the defending champs are the preseason favorites to win it again and this time make the expanded 12-team playoff. Naturally, Miami’s biggest challenge in a non-division season is expected to come from Toledo, the 2022 conference champ and 2023 league runner-up.  Since 2001, only two MAC teams, Central Michigan in 2006-07 and Northern Illinois in 2011-12, have won consecutive titles.

NCAAFB – MAC Preview – Central questions
Central Michigan starts its sixth season under coach Jim McElwain facing questions about its coaching staff. FootballScoop.com reported two weeks ago that the shakeup includes the departure of quarterbacks coach Jake Kostner, who spent four years as a Michigan assistant while working with Connor Stalions, the Wolverines’ alleged sign stealer. McElwain has not announced any changes but said he saw a photo of Stalions on Central Michigan’s sideline during the 2023 season-opener at Michigan State and wanted the school to determine how Stalions got his sideline pass. The Chippewas went 9-15 overall and 6-10 in league play over the past two seasons.

NCAAFB – MAC Preview – State of Michigan
Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton and Miami’s Chuck Martin are both in their 11th seasons and are the league’s coaching deans. Creighton has won virtually everything — except a MAC title — and will try to change that with former Rutgers and Buffalo quarterback Cole Snyder.  “We had three new quarterbacks come in in January and Cole was a known commodity,” Creighton said. “Knowing who he is as a player, as a leader, we thought it would be an awesome fit.”  Western Michigan hopes to rebound from a 4-8 mark in coach Lance Taylor’s first season. Taylor has 16 starters back. Quarterback Hayden Wolff made four starts last season after leaving Old Dominion and will be working with his seventh offensive coordinator.
