A boil water advisory is in place in some areas of Niles following testing this week.
Niles City Water Superintendent James Stevens tells us coliform bacteria was found in one of three samples taken tested. Additional samples were quickly taken.
“We had a routine sample come back positive, and our samples that we took yesterday so far are looking really good,” Stevens said. “We’re hoping to get it lifted by Friday.”
Stevens said no E coli was found in the sampling, just coliform bacteria.
“The coliform is an indicator organism. It lets us know that we might have a problem. So as a safety precaution, we do the boil notice.”
Stevens said it looks like water from one city well is affected, and once that well was taken offline, tests came back clear.
The boil order area runs along US-12 south by Mayflower Road all the way north of the city to just above Platt Street. That’s more than 400 properties. Residents are advised to boil their water before drinking it until the city issues the all-clear.
An all-clear could come from the city Friday afternoon.
