The FDA has approved a new way to fight off allergic reactions.

Neffy is a new nasal spray which will be used as an emergency treatment for adults and older children experiencing life-threatening allergic reactions. It rivals other epinephrine medications, like the EpiPen.

Detroit Medical Center allergy expert Dr. Garen Wolff says there are several differences between the two treatments.

When it comes to an ethanephrine injectable pen, it expires in 18 months, versus the Neffy nasal spray, which will expire in 30 months,” Wolff said. “So it’s definitely longer. It’s also not a needle. So for those who have needlephobia, this is a good option for them. It’s a spray as opposed to actually having a needle insert into your skin.”

Wolff says the nasal spray is also easy to travel with, as it can fit in your pocket.

About 3,500 caregivers are injured each year when they accidentally inject themselves with the EpiPen needle.
