The Buchanan Area Senior Center will be relocating for the month of September.
Speaking to the Buchanan City Commission this week, center Director Adam Burck said they’ve learned recently of problems with the parking lot.
“We have to completely rebuild our parking lot because it was not built to plan,” Burck said. “We spent two years investigating it with engineers from Wightman and did core samples and found out that the base underneath it was not put in properly, the drainage features around it weren’t put in properly, and so we’re faced with over $300,000 now of reconstruction work.”
Burck said the only way to address this is to replace the parking lot all at once. They’re planning to do that, but due to the disruption it would cause to visitors, he asked commissioners if the center could relocate to the Red Bud City Center on South Oak Street, next to the Common. That’s the original home of the Buchanan Senior Center.
Burck asked that the venue be rented to the senior center free of charge for the month. Commissioners agreed, asking the city manager to work out the details.
Burck said the senior center in 2023 served more than 28,000 people.
