The Center for Growth and Independence in Benton Harbor held its 37th annual softball fundraiser event this Friday and Saturday.

Several businesses from around Southwest Michigan participated in the recreational outing, all to help benefit a great cause. Center for Growth and Independence Executive Director Tami Gould says the event is a great hit, and she’s happy to have the support.

It means so much to us,” Gould said. “We have the businesses in the community. They’re big supporters of us, and we definitely couldn’t do this without them. Some employers help employ our clients. Some sponsor our teams, sponsor our events, or just donate.”

The non-profit organization has served thousands of individuals with disabilities in a variety of ways, helping more than 150 weekly. Its programs include community living, supported employment, and respite care.

One program, we help them to find jobs in the community and then help them maintain their job in the community. Another program is we help them to live in their own apartments. So we might help them to grocery shop or do budgeting or cleaning apartments, cooking. Another program is respite that relieves the primary caregiver.”

The center is located at 1440 East Empire Avenue in Benton Harbor.
