St. Joseph Today is preparing to welcome artists from all over the region to the downtown area next weekend for Chalk the Block.

St. Joe Today events manager Daniele Crevier tells us the artists will be using chalk to draw right on Broad Street and on the east side of Main Street.

We’ve got 37 artists joining us this year, and we’re having a couple of them do extra blocks, so we’ll actually end up with 43 pieces,” Crevier said.

Crevier says the artists can really create some impressive things.

Some recreate old family photos, some do their favorite movie characters, or just create a whole new design. Like last year, we had this really cool 3D piece that was a unicorn. It was really colorful, lots of pinks and purples. We also had another 3D piece that was Bluey. We’ve had a chalk artist recreate his daughter’s photo.”

The public can vote on their favorite chalk art for $1 at the People’s Choice Tent, to be located on Broad Street. The artists will be out showing off their skills Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4.

Crevier says visitors are encouraged to head downtown and explore the shops and restaurants.
