Set for Friday, August 2 is a film screening and fundraiser for Harbor Arts, a Harbor Country non-profit that seeks to help the art community thrive while educating the public.

Harbor Arts Board Chair David Knoebber tells us they’re going to screen the 2020 film, The Girls of Summer, at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks. The film was directed by John Hancock, the director of Prancer, and shot around Southwest Michigan.

Knoebber was the art director for The Girls of Summer and says he’s excited to get some of the crew and cast back together to raise money for Harbor Arts.

“I feel real close to John, I’ve known him for a number of years,” Knoebber said. “He’s a great director, and through the wonderful movie, I wanted to show that — if I possibly could — in Three Oaks, particularly, because a lot of the filming was done in Harbor Country.”

Hancock and some of the film’s stars will be on hand for the screening, and after the movie, there will be a Q&A session with them.

Knoebber says Harbor Arts runs several programs in the Three Oaks area, including Music in the Park.

“It tries to bring the audience to the artist and the artist to the audience. We’ve had through the years many successful events that have done that.”

Harbor Arts also works with other arts organizations to promote the community.

“The Girls of Summer: A Benefit for Harbor Arts” will begin with a 7 p.m. reception on August 2 with the film to start at 8. General admission is $20.

The Girls of Summer is about a young woman who pursues her dream of becoming a drummer. Knoebber says it’s fun to watch the film because people always notice locations around the area, sometimes even spotting themselves in some scenes.
