Neil Young has penned a lengthy message reflecting on the current racial tensions in the U.S. following the death of George Floyd while in custody of Minneapolis police.
Young’s letter, titled “Hope,” which he posted at his Neil Young Archives website, also levels strong criticism at President Donald Trump while expressing support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“Have hope. I feel a change,” writes the 74-year-old folk-rock legend. “We know black lives matter. My heart goes out to all our black families affected, so that’s all the black families through American history. I feel like we are turning a corner. Altogether, all colors on the street. We know our mission is the right one for America and for mankind.”
Young then focuses on President Trump, noting, “Although I think [he] is responsible for a lot of this unrest we feel today as he has fanned the flames and tried to turn us against one another for his political reasons, I am thankful that we are all standing for what we believe, and I think we will be a better country for this.”
He describes Trump as “a poor leader who is building walls around our house,” adding, “I believe he will be powerless soon…That sorry man will not destroy the American Dream.”
Young then brings up Biden, writing, “Whether you think Barack Obama‘s white brother can handle this situation or not, he will most likely be our new leader, bringing compassion and empathy back to the [White House].”
He adds that he hopes Biden picks former Georgia congresswoman Stacey Abrams as his running mate, “but I will take whoever he chooses.”
