Capitol/UMeA new 180-gram vinyl edition of Jimi Hendrix‘s 1970 live album, Band of Gypsys, will be released on March 27, 50 years and two days after the record first hit stores. The LP has been mastered from the original analog stereo tapes by longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer.

Band of Gypsys was recorded on January 1, 1970, during the second night of a two-night, four-show stand at the Fillmore East in New York City. The concerts marked the first time that Hendrix played with his new backing group, Band of Gypsys, which featured bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles. The album is made up of performances of six then-unreleased original songs, and was Jimi’s final album issued during his lifetime.

The 50th anniversary Band of Gypsys reissue will be available on standard black vinyl and as a limited-edition colored vinyl LP — translucent cream, red, yellow and green swirl. Both versions of the disc will come with an eight-page booklet featuring rare photos from the shows and an essay by Hendrix documentarian John McDermott, as well as a replica Band of Gypsys promotional poster.

Band of Gypsys peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than two million copies in the U.S. Side A features two songs from the first show Hendrix and company played on January 1, 1970, and side B boasts four songs from the second show that evening.

The Band of Gypsys reissue follows the November 2019 release of the Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts box set, which features the four entire shows that Hendrix and Band of Gypsys played at the famous New York venue on December 31, 1969, and January 1, 1970.
